In a culture wired for instant results, we often forget that meaningful change may take persistent action over a long period. This is a 35-year story of education and advocacy arising from the bomb-laden fields of Laos. Titus Peachey who, with his wife Linda Gehman Peachey, went to Laos on a Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) assignment in 1980, tells the story in four parts. This series originally appeared in PeaceSigns, the online magazine of the Peace and Justice Support Network. A U.S. bombing campaign at the height of the cold war left the country of Laos littered with millions of...

Rachel S. Gerber is denominational minister of Christian Formation for Mennonite Church USA. As a pastor, the story of Holy Week always poses a variety of challenges, like a parent dressing up leftovers to feed the family dinner, again. Turkey meatballs! Turkey tetrazzini! Turkey tacos! As a church we hear this same drama played out again and again, year after year. Sure the Gospel readings change, but the general story content remains the same. Often in the case with familiar stories, our minds move to auto-pilot and we fail to completely engage and enter into the story fully. But this...

By Walt Wiltschek HARRISONBURG, Virginia (Mennonite Church USA / Mennonite Education Agency) — The recent executive order temporarily banning entry from seven Muslim-majority countries has been having widespread effects, including for institutions of higher education. Several Mennonite colleges and universities have already reported impacts from the federal action, though the long-term results of the ban are still unclear. Dave Osborne, director of international admissions at Hesston (Kansas) College, says that Hesston does not currently have any students from the seven countries included in the order, but the ban could affect future plans. “The impact will be felt in our recruitment...

This is the final post in our series highlighting churches across Mennonite Church USA who were awarded the Peace and Justice Support Network’s Spread the Peace grant for 2015. The PJSN is a partnership of Mennonite Mission Network and Mennonite Church USA. Each of these congregations is working in different ways to spread peace in its community. Jan Swartzendruber, a native of Hesston, Kansas, received a Bachelor of Arts in communications from Goshen College and a master’s in international communication from The American University, Washington, D.C., before serving two years with MCC in Laos and four years in Botswana as...

Ervin Stutzman is executive director of Mennonite Church USA. In the middle of February, I attended the annual convocation of Christian Churches Together for the sixth time. I am drawn to this fellowship of churches because it is unique in this country. It brings together denominational leaders from the five families of Christian faith — the Orthodox, Catholic, Historic Black churches, Mainline churches, and the Evangelical/Pentecostal. All decisions are made by consensus, not majority vote, so it provides a safe space for all. I attend the “family meeting” the Evangelical/Pentecostals, so I’m getting to know the national leaders of the...

Jason Boone is the coordinating minister of the Peace and Justice Support Network, a joint project of Mennonite Church USA and Mennonite Mission Network. A friend of mine asked me recently, “What are you Mennonites saying about school shootings?” I had a lengthy response. I named individuals and congregations who’ve done extensive work addressing gun violence, from interpersonal to policy levels. I talked about MCC’s work. I mentioned that the Peace and Justice Support Network had given a grant to RAWtools, an organization that does great work in the area of gun violence. I also pointed to a long history...

Brothers and sisters in Mennonite Church USA, I write to you at a time when wars and rumors of wars are devastating the lives of many people around the globe. During the past year, the attention of the world has turned toward the Islamic State (ISIS), which has gained control of significant parts of Iraq and Syria. ISIS has claimed responsibility for the abduction, massacres, and even beheadings of Yazidi minorities, Shiite Muslims, Coptic and Orthodox Christians and western journalists. Such brutal and evil actions make the human heart shudder. We mourn the incalculable losses sustained by the families and...
