MennoMedia announces ‘Shaping Families’ schedule for October
By Melodie Davis
HARRISONBURG, Va., and WATERLOO, Ont.—Shaping Families, the 15-minute weekly radio program of MennoMedia, will deal with tough issues in October—bipolar illness, child abuse, understanding other faiths, housing options for aging, and men’s spirituality.
The programs air and appear online as follows:
- Oct. 1: “Living with Bipolar.” Risdon and Claudia Slate tell what it is like for Risdon to live with bipolar illness and its impact on his career and their life as a married couple. Risdon is a professor in criminology, has testified before the U.S. Congress, is co-author of a book, Criminalization of Mental Illness (Carolina Academic Press), and appeared previously in Third Way Media’s documentary, Shadow Voices: Finding Hope in Mental Illness.
- Oct. 8: “Child Abuse.” Jeanette Harder, author of the book, Let the Children Come (Herald Press), talks about how churches, schools, and agencies working with children can do better in protecting children from abuse and neglect. She helped begin Dove’s Nest to help faith communities keep children safe.
- Oct. 15: “Understanding Other Faiths.” Lynne Hybels, an author and speaker from Willow Creek Community Church in Chicago, encourages people to try to understand those of other faith backgrounds as a step toward easing hostilities and violence.
- Oct. 22: “Aging: Options.” Stella Henry, founder of an assisted living facility and author of The Eldercare Handbook (HarperCollins), looks at the myriad of choices elders and their families face in housing.
- Oct. 29: “Families Under Construction.” Gareth Brandt, professor of practical theology at Columbia Bible College in British Columbia, talks about ways his family makes time for family rituals and traditions. Brandt has recently written a book on men’s spirituality for “men who don’t read books on men’s spirituality,” Under Construction: Reframing Men’s Spirituality (Herald Press).
Shaping Families is now airing on 18 stations across the U.S. sponsored by businesses, churches, individuals, and radio stations. The program was launched January 2010 and is also online at www.ShapingFamilies.com. Also featured at the website is a weekly blog by host Burton Buller, a weekly recipe, a study guide useable by Sunday school classes, and many additional resources.
Shaping Families is produced by MennoMedia, an agency of Mennonite Church USA and Mennonite Church Canada creating faith-based print, video, radio, and web resources.
