Protect children, youth and vulnerable adults through effective background checks.
Safe Church of Mennonite Church USA encourages each congregation to do background checks on employees and volunteers working with children, youth and vulnerable adults.
Check with your insurance company for any requirements on background checks.
Two options for running background checks:
1) Contract Safe Church to run background checks for the congregation for confidentiality and convenience sake.
or
2) The congregation selects a background check service and appoints a manager to:
- gather authorization paperwork from each individual for a background check
- enter the information online
- receive the reports on the individuals
- report to leadership the result of the background check
- manage the records in a secure location
Safe Church has set up an agreement with Safe Hiring Solutions to run background checks. The Background Checks will include:
- Social Security number verification
- National Sex Offender Registry
- National Criminal Database
- Arrest Alert Pre-Search
- County Criminal Search (7 year)
- Federal Criminal Courts (regional database searches— there are 12 regions across the nation).
It is important for a background check to be as thorough as possible. The best practice is to include county, regional and national levels when conducting searches for criminal records. Background checks usually cover the residential locations of the last 7 years.
